[Halo Quin] Is Magic All in Your Head? & Rope for Ritual starts 19th April 2025
What's on your reading pile currently? I'm working through Historiola by Carl Nordblom, (on how narrative charms might actually work), Demonizing the Queen of Sheba, by Jacob Lassner (a fascinating study of how this powerful queen's story has evolved and been understood) and True Grimoire by Jake Stratton-Kent (the pieces on how pagan deities become described as demons, while still being who they are underneath it all are of particular interest to me!). You might notice a theme... I can find stories almost anywhere!
(Which is a good thing really - Cauldron of Awen, on storytelling magic, has begun. Replay of the first class is up, reply and let me know if you still want to join us!) This has gotten me thinking about the stories we tell about magic, and how when I began I learned that spells were for psychological effects, which is entirely at odds with how they've been understood historically, or in most other cultures! So this week you'll find my musings on this before the events listing... But I do have some exciting news first!
I've been making a concerted study of conjuration in the old grimoires recently, where the invocations and spells include instructions "not to cause trouble", and historiolae, where often the ailment to be removed is named, and it has reminded me of a difference in the way we often understand magic today. I grew up in an ostensibly materialistic society, where all things spiritual are reduced to psychological concepts or social interactions, at least in the way we talk about them. When setting intentions I often teach students to make the phrases positive - because, as I was taught, the "subconscious doesn't recognise a negative'. Which does have benefits! But here they are, the old charms and invocations, which were usually used, and recorded, because they were effective, demonstrating that it doesn't always matter what the subconscious thinks, the spirits are real, and they're listening. Once we take magic out of our heads, though, we begin to find the importance of the physical world. The space, our actions, how we prepare our bodies. Our psychological state is important, but it is in service to the magic, rather than the container of it. And our embodiment is just as valuable. Rope - the ritual cord, the circle, knot magic, the woven web of wyrd spun by the Nornir, or Fates... - is a tangible expression of the energy we work with in ritual, bringing our thoughts into physical, visible, form. This is part of why I love it, why I found that rope was a powerful tool for a human who spent so much time thinking and wondering and worrying, to help me find my magic in my body again. The wonder of it is that once you feel the magic tangibly in your hands, you understand how real it is, not just conceptually but as embodied. And then you can use that rope to shift your psychological state, shift your mind and spirit, and remember that you are spirit too. That's why I love mixing solo rope-work with magic. That's what we're exploring in Rope for Ritual and Magic. That's what you can learn in the Crimson Coven.
Next Crimson Craft Course ~ Rope for Ritual & Magic
After my workshop last year on self-tying for magic several people have asked if I'd offer something longer... well here it is! I've worked hard to make this something suitable for beginners to ropework, which protects your privacy while allowing for direct support.
If you want to explore magic through physical, embodied techniques...
If s*xual healing is something you feel called to, but, well, not like that!... (the explicit stuff is not for me either, honestly, and those spaces are so challenging to navigate if you're queer, vulnerable, or if someone unscrupulous is running them. Hence my Crimson Craft work - no nudity, gentle approach, and no pressure sacred sensuality).
Or if you're curious about how k*nky techniques can be used magically...
I've created this course for you.
All you need is one piece of rope, a pair of shears, and some time to yourself. Explore three months of materials and support to expand your toolkit and build your own solo magical ritual.
A gentle introduction to using self-tying techniques in ritual & magic. You will explore embodied trance, energy work, & journeying, & integrate new skills & experiences into your magic.
