[Halo Quin at TEA] May Events & What is a Faery Anyway???

The Merry Month of May

Hello lovelies,

Beltane is here in the Northern Hemisphere and that means it is Faery Season! (Though really, it's always Faery season...)

Have you ever seen a faery?

Would you know if you had?

According to historians the word "fae" originally meant a "magical" or "fated" person. It was given to humans who were in those liminal spaces between the workaday world and a world of possibility, who were other somehow, who could do magic. Eventually the meaning shifted, as so many words do, from humans that were touched by magic, to humans that could make magic... to people who are magic.

There is debate over whether "the Fair Folk" only includes the human shaped people whose lives mirror ours, as they are depicted in many tales (and as many people experience them) or whether they include all the many different types of beings that are definitely not human!

On the one hand, many of the most powerful stories have humans and Faeries meeting, trading, healing each other, marrying, falling in love, arguing, having children together, and generally being very similar (though not entirely).

And there is a long history of living humans going to live with the Fair Folk when we die, of our ancestors living in the same realm as them. And of us meeting them in the landscape, at markets, in the world we call home.

On the other hand, I think there's something really important about the inclusion of other shapes and types of spirits as "faeries".

It reminds us that people aren't always human shaped.

In fact, they are not more often than they are.

There are many beings that can be called faeries, and the thing that makes them the same kind of spirit is not that they look like us.

What makes a Brownie, a Kelpie, a Lake-Lady, a Selkie, the Huldrafolk, a Knocker, and many more all faeries?

They are spirits of the Earth, of this planet, just like the foxes, the nettles, the moths, and the humans.

And some of them love to work, play, and love with us.

Whether they teach us to have a care for the land through their stories, or appear in our dreams, or meet us in the woods and magic circles, many of them want to help us be better, and happier, neighbours.

So have you ever met a faery?

Have you ever found yourself nudged toward picking up litter in a woodland grove? Or smiling at unheard music as you pass the hawthorn in the hedgerow? Have you ever seen a shadow like a large black cat, scaring you away from danger? Or spotted horses in the sea foam, hooves flashing and rolling, where you know it might just pull under the unwary? Or met a stranger on a journey who said something unexpected and changed your whole perspective on life?

Have you seen the flashes of light out of the corner of your eye that are spirits dancing? Have you heard their song, beautiful and haunting, at the edge of sleep? Have you felt their curious presence as you do something out of the ordinary, like reading poetry to the trees in an ancient graveyard?

Have you ever met a faery that offered to teach you magic?

Would you like to?
